ThemeQuotes is a concept devised by
Pegi Bevins who as a high school Arts teacher saw the need to promote values in the classroom.
Having been an admirer of aphorisms, she lined her classroom walls with famous, and not-so-famous, quotations and referred to them in her teaching whenever possible.
During that time, Ms Bevins also wanted to find a good way to "top off" novel units. She experimented with developing a trivia game for
"To Kill a Mockingbird" but says she wasn't happy with just asking students what Scout's real first name is or what Scout and Jem find in the knothole of the tree. Ideally, she wanted an activity that would be fun for students while stressing the lessons good novels teach. As a result,
ThemeQuotes games were born.
As students answer trivia questions about the novel, they have the chance to solve
ThemeQuotes puzzles, thought-provoking and value-promoting quotations that tie into the themes of the book.
ThemeQuotes games link famous quotations to the themes of the books you teach!. Students must puzzle out the
ThemeQuote
by working in teams to answer trivia questions from the main novel. Each trivia question answered correctly provides a letter toward solving the famous quotation. After solving the puzzle, the class can discuss how the famous quote relates to the novel theme or various other topics.
ThemeQuotes
games promote values, encourage teamwork, develop students' understanding of theme, challenge students' reading-for-detail and provide a great review for objective tests while also exposing them to some of the great thinkers in history!
Each game contains detailed instructions, up to 300 trivia questions with answers, transparency-ready
ThemeQuotes master sheets with solutions, and several discussion starters for each question.
History ThemeQuotes for high school
are also available:
The Civil War Era, World War 11 and Vietnam.
